What is the goal of the new core curriculum?
Hartland’s core curriculum is at the heart of our undergraduate experience. Our program is aimed at developing the whole person: the spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical components of each student. Through the core curriculum the student will gain the essential knowledge and skills needed in order to be successful in college, the mission field, and in life. As part of our pursuit of excellence, this new core offers a comprehensive academic program that covers the common branches of learning.
Central to the mission of the new core is the goal of providing all Hartland students, regardless of their major, with the tools, knowledge, and experience they need to be effective in the foreign or home mission field.
What is the rationale behind revising the old curriculum?
We saw a need to better align our core curriculum with our goal of training 21st-century missionaries. Missionary training is broader than having Bible classes as the distinguishing characteristic of the core. We want our core to give all of our students various tools that can aid them in ministering to people. Nonetheless, in our new core, we have not removed any of the previous Bible classes. Instead, we have sought to enrich the mission focus of our program by adding missiology, evangelism, discipleship, and general education classes.
In addition, we have added a whole term with a summer missionary training school, and we have restructured our chapels in such a way as to address relevant topics which aren’t covered in the classes we are offering, or that we want to reinforce by reviewing important content such as Fundamentals of the Christian Faith.
