As we look for the signs of Christ’s soon return, we are ever reminded that a better world is coming. Even now we are to seek “first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.” Matthew 6:33. Concerning this fallen world we are told, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” 1 John 2:15, 16.
Like Abraham we now “desire a better country, that is, a heavenly.” Hebrews 11:16. We look “for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” Hebrews 11:10.
John the beloved “saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away: and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Revelation 21:1, 2.
In the new heaven and the new earth there will be fountains of living waters. The tree of life will yield her fruit. There will be beautiful plains, hills, and lofty summits. It will be absolutely beautiful.
Those who will live on the new earth will be “poor in spirit” and “meek.” Matthew 5:3, 5. The Psalmist writes, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” Psalm 24:3-5.
While we look for the signs of the sure return of Jesus Christ, we are now to overcome selfishness. Be honest with your true spiritual condition. Study the perfect Pattern, namely, the life of Jesus. It is only as we become more and more like Him, that we are being fit for heaven.
