Some believe that the liberal, secular humanist is the greatest threat to religious freedom. Some would teach that terrorist groups like Al-Qaida hold that position. However, it was found in a recent poll that only 17% of Americans know that our religious freedom is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. Could ignorance be our greatest threat to religious liberty?
Many of those who are familiar with the First Amendment believe in the “free exercise” of religion, but fail to advocate that there is to be “no establishment” of religion. Here lies much of our challenge. While most are not familiar with the wording of our First Amendment rights, others interpret the First Amendment incorrectly. We have a great work to do in educating the public about our First Amendment rights and the separation of church and state.
