Many Evangelical and Catholic groups expressed outrage over the Obama Administration’s decision not to provide religious exemption from the new health care law that will require insurance plans covering contraception, sterilization and some abortion-causing drugs.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius commented that religious groups have a one year grace period to comply with the new mandate, “I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services.”
But a one year grace period does not change the fact that people of faith will be forced to do something against their conscience.
Archbishop Dolan said, “To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their health care is literally unconscionable. . . . This represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty.”
I hope Archbishop Dolan remembers his own words when his Catholic church and the various Protestant denominations push for enforced Sunday legislation.
It is tragic that not many people truly understand the principles involved in religious liberty and the separation of church and state. The Sunday laws are coming!
