Santorum: Separation of Church and State “Makes Me Want to Throw Up”

Mar 13, 2012

By Jeff Wehr

In a news interview with This Week host, George Stephanopoulos, Rick Santorum, Republican presidential candidate, commented on the separation of church and state, saying, “I don’t believe in an America where the separation of church and state are absolute. The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country. . . to say that people of faith have no role in the public square? You bet that makes me want to throw up.”

Santorum also told Meet the Press host David Gregory that the separation of church and state was “not the founders’ vision.”

Santorum is correct in saying that people of faith have the right to voice their opinions in the public square. But where he is wrong is that the church has the right to operate the state. This mixture of truth and error will deceive many.
