DNA is not Destiny

It has been widely thought that genetic risk for heart disease is unavoidable, but a recent study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital suggests that this is not the case. Participants in this study who had a healthier lifestyle—did not smoke currently, had a body mass index of less than 30, did physical exercise at least once a week, and maintained a healthy diet—were found to reduce their risk of cardiac incidents by one half, despite carrying gene variants previously associated with greater heart attack risk. So in case you thought you couldn’t escape your genetic disposition for heart disease, think again; there is hope. DNA is not destiny. Following a healthy lifestyle can greatly reduce genetic heart attack risk,” sciencedaily.com, November 15, 2016.
